MUGHALE-E-AZAM - A TRIBUTE TO LOVE

08.29.05 (9:19 pm)   [edit]
The other day I was watching K.Asif's unforgettable work of art - Mughal-e-Azam and something just struck a chord in my heart. I was not only overwhelmed by the magnus opus - the grandeur of the sets, soulful music, the exquisitely verbalized dialogues immaculately executed through the performance of all the leading actors not to mention the beauty of Madhubala but also the heart-wrenching core of romance symbolized by the tenderness of a feather's touch! I remember the tense sequence when Akbar on being informed about Salim's nocturnal rendezvous with Anarkali, thunders into the room only to catch them together - the sheer terror in her face as Anarkali faints in Salim's arms while pulling at his string of pearls breaking it and thereby shattering the ominous silence. That was superbly envisioned and perfectly executed. But perhaps the high point of the classic is the dance sequence "Jab pyar kiya to darna kya" where Anarkali defiantly proclaims her love for the prince and the shot where the fragmented pieces of the Seesh mahal lights up with the image of Madhubala to the stains of "Chup na sakega ishq humara charon taraf hai uska nazara" This is story telling at its best!! Now the moot question here is about love - is it best celebrated through such tragedies? a la Heer - Ranjha, Shri - Farhad and Mughal-e-Azam type of stories - as they are most remembered. Somehow the innumerable love stories which have happy endings in our movies are not as well loved or as dramatic as the tragic ones. Does that mean - to love is to sacrifice? Love has inspired so many poets and artists to create their finest piece of work. Does that mean that there was just one love story that inspired them a lifetime? We generally feel that a successful end to a love story should be a happy marriage but then do things turn sour after that? Can't a love story not end in marriage yet does not break up? Whst is adultery? But then I guess ... there can never be anything like a life long love affair ... such fairy tale romances does not exist in reality! Or are we talking about infatuation here which is more like a passing fancy but then how can one distinguish between the two and how does one know when real love comes their way???
