Holi - Palette of life!
Today was Holi and I was filled with a sense of nostalgia … memories of those early years in Kolkata when Holi was played with such fervor and festivity. When anyone and everyone remotely connected with the family would drop in to play Holi and join in the fun. I remember I used to be so scared and would hide behind my grandma who would be the only non-participant in the house. The surprising part was how the grown ups would also act as kids and infact would play with water colour guns, balloons, fast colours in addition to the normal ‘gulal’. I also recall that we would actually have spectators as all our neighbours would peep out of their windows and there would even be cheers and applause to support the family and soon we will have everyone in the locality join us. Really, those were the days …
Slowly as time passed… the members in our Kolkata household dispersed to other parts of the country to take up jobs or continue higher studies, I grew up and got over my fear of colours. Holi ceased to be celebrated simply because and central characters had relocated and while I yearn to play the festival of colours. However, we would gather a small group of friends in our locality and go around but the family connection was missing. It was then that I regretted for being such a chicken all these years!
The rest of our (I am including my sister as she was the only friend who would not change) growing years were spent in many cities and we got more involved in studies and exams, Holi was hardly observed but mummy would definitely prepare the typical Bengali delicacies of Malpoa, patisapta, gugiya, nimki, chitrakoot etc on this occasion. Holi in Vizag was special - atleast during the early days and we used to go around visiting friends. Later after shifting to
Unfortunately, now Holi is more of a formality and it smear colour on each other just as a ‘shagun’. This year was not bad, I still have traces of colour on my forehead as I had some friends dropping and some others didn’t turn up! Unfortunately!! Let’s hope this festival in future brings in more happiness and colours in our life! Looking forward to life!!
